What does DPP mean?
DPP = Digital Product Passport: structured product data the EU requires for specific product groups — materials, composition, circularity, repair — reachable via a QR code and registered in the EU registry. Created by the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR, (EU) 2024/1781); batteries are the first mandatory category. Note: DPP has unrelated meanings elsewhere (DPP-4 inhibitors in medicine, Canon DPP in photography).
Which products need a DPP, and from when?
Batteries are first: from 18 Feb 2027, EV, LMT and industrial (>2kWh) batteries placed on the EU market or put into service require a passport. The second statutory date is detergents: Regulation (EU) 2026/405 makes the DPP mandatory from 23 Sep 2029. All other categories (steel, textiles, aluminium, tyres, furniture, mattresses) are currently “expected” — no date exists until a delegated act is adopted.
We are a Chinese supplier — is the passport our duty or the buyer’s?
Statutory duties follow whoever first places the battery on the EU market (Art 77(4), 77(10)) — usually your EU customer or their importer creates the passport and registers it. The Chinese manufacturer’s core duty is supplying accurate Annex XIII data and cooperating with verification. Confirm roles first with the free scope triage tool.
What happens without a DPP? How big are the fines?
From 18 Feb 2027, in-scope batteries without a passport cannot lawfully be placed on the EU market — a market-access break first, with customs and market surveillance wired into the registry. Penalty amounts are set by national law of each member state; there is no single figure. Ask anyone quoting “the fine” for the actual national provision.
How much does a battery passport cost?
Five components: ① data readiness (internal hours + upstream collection — usually the largest), ② passport software subscription (per model/volume; request quotes), ③ gap tests and carbon accounting where applicable, ④ QSeal + organisation validation when you register, ⑤ operations (dynamic updates). Any calculator promising a total from a few parameters is an estimate, not a quote.
What is inside the QR code — the product data itself?
No. The QR encodes only a URL (GS1 Digital Link format or equivalent) pointing to the passport data. Resolution is identity-tiered: consumers see public info, repairers see disassembly manuals, recyclers see composition, authorities see compliance files. The unique identifier must follow the ISO/IEC 15459 series (GS1 is one recognised issuing agency, not a mandate). Try the free GS1/QR decoder to see what a code actually carries.
What is a QSeal? Must our company buy one?
Not necessarily. Organisation validation belongs to the registering entity: only if your legal entity registers the passport in the EU registry do you need an eIDAS qualified electronic seal under the current user guide. If your EU buyer is the first placer, validation sits with them. Run the scope triage before requesting quotes.
How does the China battery passport / digital ID relate to the EU passport?
The two systems do not mutually recognise each other, but the underlying data overlaps heavily: domestic traceability codes, GB test reports and recycling records can be mapped field-by-field (reusable / needs conversion / needs supplement / unconfirmed). Manage two ledgers; run dual identifiers (domestic code + ISO/IEC 15459). See the “one dataset, two passports” guide.
How do we choose passport software? Do you publish rankings?
We don’t score vendors — comparisons without a shared test sample are secondhand. Our software page organises providers with evidence labels (official disclosure / public reporting / to verify) and gives a ten-question demo checklist: BMS ingestion, registry integration, tiered access, data export, supplier collaboration, Chinese UI, and more.
Are there ready-to-use templates or checklists?
Yes — the bilingual supplier request pack (free, no sign-up): Chinese instructions + English workbook, three email templates, evidence index, responsibility matrix and a completed fictional example. Field IDs match this site’s tools. The scope triage exports a downloadable report; the gap checklist exports CSV task lists and a paste-ready buyer reply.
